Marco Gabbiadini is one of the most popular and richest English footballer who was born on January 20, 1968 in Nottingham, England, United Kingdom. Marco Gabbiadini (Italian pronunciation of “marko gabbja”di:ni; born 20 January 1968), is an ex-footballer from England. His career spanned 18 years, between 1985 and 2003. He was a member of 12 clubs and scored 226 league goals.
Gabbiadini’s third season at Wearside would see him continue to excel in front of goal as he scored 22 goals in 49 league games, helping Sunderland regain their top flight status. Highlights included a hat trick against Watford at Roker park on September 9, 1989 and the second in a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United at Saint James’ Park on 16th May 1990. This goal was the one Gabbiadini will be most fondly associated with. Although Swindon Town won the match 1-0 thanks to a Gary Bennett own goal on 16 May 1990, Sunderland retained their place in Wembley’s First Division.
He started the 1991-92 season still at Roker Park, and scored five goals in nine Second Division appearances, including a spectacular six-minute hat-trick against Charlton Athletic at Upton Park on 17 September 1991. Those goals would prove to be his last for the club. His final appearance in a red and white shirt would come four days later in a 2−1 defeat to Grimsby Town at Roker Park on 21 September 1991 in front of a crowd of 16,535. Only two days later Gabbiadini broke Wearside hearts by leaving the club.
Since retiring, Gabbiadini has run a restored Victorian hotel in York with his family. The hotel won Guest House of the Year in the 1999 York Tourism Awards. Gabbiadini has also hinted that he would be interested in television work and was a Sky pundit for Hartlepool’s play-off match against Bristol City in 2004.
Gabbiadini represented England U21 at the 1989 Toulon Tournament. France won the tournament with a 3-2 defeat against eventual finalists Bulgaria. His second appearance was a 2-0 loss to USA in the third-place play-off on June 11, 1989. Gabbiadini would represent England’s B team. The match was played at Roker Park against Czechoslovakia on 24 April 1990. England won the match 2-0.

Gabbiadini was the son of an Italian father and an English mother. He was raised in Nottingham by Nunthorpe Grammar School. After being signed by Denis Smith as an apprentice at age 16, Gabbiadini began his professional career in York City. He was immediately noticed and drafted quickly into the England under-18 team. This was to avoid being tied to Italy, his father’s birthplace. Gabbiadini, then 17, had already made his debut in York City against Bolton Wanderers. He quickly made his mark in the team, scoring 18 goals in just 50 games and making 21 sub-appearances for the Minstermen. At the age of 18, he also scored his first hat trick in York’s 4-1 Freight Scout Trophy win against Darlington.
Denis Smith, his mentor and manager, would leave York. Smith was to follow Denis Smith to Sunderland in exchange for a transfer fee (PS80,000) on 23 September 1987. Sunderland was relegated to Third Division. Smith saw Gabbiadini as the ideal signing to get them back to the Second Division. Gabbiadini signed, but it was considered risky because Smith had to sell Mark Proctor, a Sunderland midfielder, in order to raise money to sign him. Gabbiadini made Sunderland’s debut against Chester City at Roker park, scoring a 2-0 win. Three days later, his first goal for Sunderland came in a 3-0 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage. He scored two goals. This feat would be repeated in the following two games. By scoring regularly, he would quickly become a key player for Sunderland and a crowd favorite. He is also known in Wearside folklore thanks to his partnership with Eric Gates. Gabbiadini was a key player in Sunderland’s Third Division title win. He scored 21 goals in his 35 league games.
Shortly after the start of the 1991–92 season, Gabbiadini was sold to Crystal Palace for a club record transfer fee of £1.8 million. He was seen as a replacement for Ian Wright, who joined Arsenal for £2.5 million in September 1991.
