Marc Carroll is one of the most popular and richest Irish musician who was born on January 25, 1972 in Dublin, Ireland. Carroll was born in Dublin in 1972. He moved to London at the age of 15 During this period, he was a member of several punk bands. In 1989, a 7″ single was recorded at a studio near Islington in London. This record was limited to 250 copies, but many were destroyed. Only one known copy of this record exists. It was pressed as a test pressing. Uncut magazine interviewed him and he stated that “The Sex Pistols were the two things I benefited from in my life.” Carroll has mentioned Brian Wilson and Bob Dylan as his inspirations. Carroll wrote in an article for American Songwriter 2013 about his diverse influences. “All my life, I have been drawn towards melodies, and so often these melodies were providing urgent, savvy messages, and stories. These stories and tales often came from “outsiders”. These songs were unique and distinctively sung by distinct voices. They were uplifting and filled you with joy. Everything was possible, from Chuck Berry to Chuck D. From Captain Beefheart to the Sex Pistols. There are no rules. From Crass and Bob Dylan. You are the only authority.
Universal Music signed Carroll in 1999. He recorded his first solo album Ten of Swords later in the year. Only 3 singles were available in Ireland. Carroll performed all the instruments and was also a co-producer with Adi Winman, his long-time partner in recording. Craig Gannon, an ex-Smiths guitarist, was a part of several tracks. Gannon toured the album in Japan and the UK with Carroll in 2002. Andrew Stidman (drummer of UK rock band The Wildhearts) was featured on one track. Further problems with the record company hampered the album’s release. The UK label refused permission to release the album. Carroll stated in 2005 that sometimes record companies will sign you up to ensure no one else can. This happened to him. Universal left me hanging for two years, so I didn’t hesitate to say goodbye. I love music. I don’t know any other. Universal’s Irish division pressed the album, and sent it to media. However, it was pulled a week before its release date. Andrew Lauder, a legendary UK A&R person, eventually released the album on his Evangeline record label in
- The record received critical acclaim. UK music magazine Uncut gave it a 4 star rating and called it “One the best debuts of recent years.”
Evangeline released All Wrongs Reversed, a compilation of B-sides and rarities in 2003. The original album contained 11 songs including a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Gates of Eden”. Later that year the song appeared as a download on the official Bob Dylan webpage. The album also included another Dylan song, “Senor, Tales of Yankee Power”. Marc Carroll has also recorded Dylan’s “The Times They Are a-Changin'” as a B-side on the UK single “Crashpad Number” and “Tombstone Blues” for Uncut Magazine’s Highway 61 Revisited…Revisted tribute CD. Rock critic and author, Johnny Rogan reviewed the album for Mojo saying “A classy compendium of lost songs and rarities, as ever, his pop sensibility is positively tangible, permeating almost every track.” The Album was reissued again in different packaging by High Noon in 2006. In 2014 One Little Indian released a remastered and completely revised edition of the album that duplicated only 5 songs from the original while adding 10 previously unreleased tracks, including “2541”, “The Main” and “Now That You Know Me”, all of which were written by former Husker Du drummer and songwriter, Grant Hart. Carroll’s first show as a solo artist was with Hart in 1995. All Wrongs Reversed also featured a cover version of the Buffalo Springfield song, “For What It’s Worth”. The track was originally released in the US only on Five Way Street – A Tribute To Buffalo Springfield.
In 2005 Evangeline released the second album, World on a Wire. The sound of the album was vastly different with the bulk of the songs being written on the piano and with string arrangements. Uncut magazine awarded the album a 4 star review writing, “For the follow up to the mighty ‘Ten of Swords’ Carroll has dampened the psych pop fizz for a slower dazzle and it’s the more layered arrangements that set these wonderful songs of personal faith aglow.” Mojo magazine in their review wrote, “He draws out some fetching melodies, none better than No Time at All which encapsulates his striking ability to make coherent music about inner confusion.” The Irish Times with another 4 star review said, “The truth is the guy is something of a genius; On World on a Wire he has opted for strings of a more mellow nature and created a record of warmth, truth, beauty and something approximating a career best. If Bob Dylan raised on an aural diet of Brian Wilson rather than Woody Guthrie appeals to you, then prepare to be blown away.” Ireland’s Hot Press magazine noted “fans of Cohen, Buckley, Cave and Cash should find plenty of resonance on this brave artistic statement.” Maverick Magazine in their review picked up on Carroll’s lyric writing, “There is a darkness and quite startling intensity to his lyrics that can make the listener feel decidedly uncomfortable.” The change in musical direction wasn’t without its critics. One review for Planet Sound said “It is the benchmark for disappointing albums in 2005.” 3 singles were released from the album. The album was reissued again in different packaging and with a bonus DVD by High Noon in 2006. In 2014 One Little Indian released a remastered and expanded edition of World on a Wire as part of a comprehensive overhaul of Carroll’s back catalogue. The album was listed in a book 101 Irish records You Need To Hear Before You Die. The same book also referenced the 1998 album, “Where Old Ghosts Meet.”
The Hormones was a London-based rock band that was formed in 1996. The group’s sole songwriter was Carroll. Their sound was described as a mix of Teenage Fanclub, Stiff Little Fingers and Teenage Fanclub. The band’s debut single was released in 1996 by Trade2/Island Records singles club. It was Carroll who was both the founder and the songwriter. Jez Housden on bass and Pat Walters, a former Wildhearts drummer and Guns n’ Wankers drummer were the band’s members. The group signed to Richard Branson’s V2 label, and released five singles. The third single, “Mr. Wilson”, was Carroll’s tribute song to Brian Wilson from The Beach Boys. The lyrics almost exclusively consist of Beach Boys song titles. Brian Wilson heard Carroll’s track, and Carroll was invited by the legendary songwriter to his birthday show at New York City’s Beacon Theatre in 1999. A 1998 album, “Where Old Ghosts Meet” (a reference to On Raglan Road by Patrick Kavanagh), was released. However, it was deleted that week. It was listed in 101 Irish Records You Must Hear Before you Die. Friends featured the band in its wedding episode. The program featured a track by Carroll, originally released as a B side, “Tired Old Souls”. They toured regularly throughout Europe and the UK. In 1996, Carroll performed at the Weavers Club in London with Eric Bogle, a Scottish poet/songwriter. The band opened for The Cranberries during a European tour 1999. In Japan, a 2CD edition was released on the Excellent label in 2002. It was limited to 1000 copies. The bonus disc included B-sides as well as unreleased material. In Japan, a second pressing of the vinyl edition was released on the Velvet label. It contained 500 copies. After a concert in Madrid, Spain in 1999, the band broke up. The recorded output is still unavailable. In 2003, the Last Waltz label released a multi-disc (6CD) bootleg set called “On A Quiet Street: The Complete Where Old Ghosts Meet Session”. This set included demos, outtakes and radio sessions as well as unreleased material. Since 1999, Carroll has not performed any of these songs live. Five singles were released by The Hormones, each featuring three non-album B-sides. This added 15 songs to the Where Old Ghosts meet album.

One Little Indian Records signed him to his latest studio album, Love Is all Or Love Isn’t At All, on 6 November 2015. In February 2014, the label released expanded and remastered editions of his 4 first albums. Although he has been praised for his recordings, he has not achieved mainstream success. The Irish Times newspaper called him “One Ireland’s greatest lost songwriters, touched with genius and whose dealings in the music industry have become legendary”, while Fred Deller, a British rock critic, wrote in Mojo Magazine that his works were “deserving a wider audience.”
In 1990, Carroll returned to Dublin as the sole songwriter and founder of Puppy Love Bomb, a three-piece power/punk band. Although the group was known for their ferocious live performances, they are most well-known for their provocative T-shirts with the slogan “Dublin is Dead”, which were sold at the first performances. They recorded several radio sessions with Dave Fanning and were eventually signed to the UK independent label Rough Trade, where they released 3 singles. Martin Carr, of The Boo Radleys, produced two EPs. Bob Mould’s post Husker Du outfit Sugar accompanied the band on tour across Europe. Mould joined Mould on the final night of the tour to perform a rendition of Ticket To Ride, a classic Beatles song. The label ran out of money and no album was ever released. After a show at the South by Southwest Festival, Austin, Texas, the band split. Carroll returned to London, where Rough Trade assumed his management. Since 1994, the group’s recorded output has been unavailable. The band released only 10 songs, but outtakes, radio sessions and demos have been available on numerous bootleg CDs originating in Japan. The most well-known title is “Destroy All Melody”, which includes live performances from 1992 as well as a recording of “Ticket to Ride” with Bob Mould. One Little Indian Records now owns Puppy Love Bomb’s recordings and copyright. ….
Live performances have been sporadic in recent years and Carroll has not toured consistently since 2005. Some one-off performances have taken place in Los Angeles over the past decade including shows with Brent Rademaker from Beechwood Sparks and the LA based Belle Gardens. Carroll has not played in Ireland since 2006. Reviewing the Guilfest Festival on 4 July 2003, Uncut Magazine wrote “Saying nothing at first, instead letting his songs picture storm lashed apocalypse and drug drained romance, the Irishman’s attacking presence ignores the crowd’s somewhat somnolence, burning through it.”.
