After Brent’s departure, SNFU remained a four-piece. Marc formed the side project Based on a True Story, which lasted about a year. After extensive touring, SNFU was again disbanded. Chinn and Ken Fleming, the former bassist of the band, reformed the group two years later. However, both Belkes decided not to participate in this new incarnation.

After leaving SNFU, Belke ceased performing live but continued to work on solo recordings. In 2017 he released the SNFU single “A Happy Number” on his own Rake Records imprint.

Marc and Brent Belke founded the Wheat Chiefs in 1990, just after the first SNFU splitup. They added power pop and melodic hardcore influences into their punk rock sound. Marc was the lead singer in the Wheat Chiefs. He also shared guitar duties with his brother. Their only album, Redeemer was released in 1996 before Brent decided to leave both bands to pursue a career as a composer of musical scores for television and film.

While many members of SNFU were involved with the band’s compositions in some way, Belke was the main musical songwriter throughout the band’s history. Chinn was the lyricist. The group released three albums in the 1980s, and then was briefly disbanded. In 1992, they moved to Vancouver and signed with Epitaph Records. Three more albums were released by Epitaph.

Belke, the youngest of five brothers, was a member of basement bands as a teenager with his twin brother Brent. In 1981, the brothers founded their first gigging band, Live Sex Shows. Ken Chinn, a singer who they met in Edmonton’s skateboarding subculture, was the band’s front man. After the band disbanded, the trio formed Society’s No Faking Use. SNFU was their new name. This new band was a catalyst for the skate punk movement and influenced the punk rock scene in general. Belke was also a drummer in the band Bing Jesus, which ended in the early 1980s.

Following his departure from SNFU, Belke pursued a university degree in communications. He spent several years as an on-air personality with CFBV Radio in Smithers, British Columbia, and later CJUK FM, Magic 99.9. Thunder Bay, Ontario. He began working in Victoria in 2013, but ultimately left radio several years later.
