Mesa moved to his hometown, signing for Xerez CD in Division 2. He produced three solid seasons but was relegated in the last. He retired six months short of his 40th Birthday after one year playing for Balompedica Linense in La Balona.

Mesa made his debut for Spain on 14/11/1979 and scored in a friendly loss to Denmark in Cadiz. He sustained a serious injury in the first minutes of his second appearance against Czechoslovakia, on 16 April 1980.

Mesa was an integral part of Asturias’ domestic consolidation. He helped them to a runner up place in 1978-79, back-to back Copa del Rey finals in early 1980s – both lost – and four UEFA Cup participations. His incredible stamina earned him the nickname Siete Pulmones.

Mesa was born in San Roque (Cadiz), Andalusia. He started playing football for the local club Real Balompedica Linense. After being discovered by Enrique Casas, a renowned scout, he was purchased by Sporting de Gijon, La Liga. He made his debut in the team on 28 December 1975.

Mesa played 43 matches in 1986–87, scoring seven goals (both career-highs) to help Sporting finish in fourth position. Even though the player, aged nearly 35, was still in good physical conditions, his contract was not renewed and he moved to Real Murcia also of the top level, but left the team after a couple of weeks, unsettled.
