Richard Starkings, born 27 January 1962, is a British font designer, comic book editor, writer and letterer. He is one of the pioneers of computer-based comic book lettering and one of the most prolific creators in the industry.

Starkings originally intended that these fonts’ advertisements would feature Marvel Comics characters. However, Starkings failed to get the authorization to do so and instead created Hip Flask, an anthropomorphic hippos “Information Agent” to illustrate the ads. Hip Flask is now a published author of his own comic book series, Active Images. Starkings drafted the first two issues together with Ladronn, and Joe Casey was enlisted to help co-script. Starkings plotted and scripted Mystery City and all subsequent issues. Image Comics began an ongoing prequel series, Hip Flask: Elephantmen in 2006. It was written and illustrated by Starkings by Axel Medellin and Justin “Moritat” Norman, Marian Churchland and Tom Scioli.

The similarities between the character and a comic book character from Australia called Hairbutt in 2001 led Bodine Amerikah, a co-creator of Hairbutt, and Darren Close (OzComics) to accuse Starkings of plagiarism. Starkings claimed that Hip Flask was created without knowing about Hairbutt and that the similarities were an odd coincidence.

Starkings’ original inspiration for their lettering style came from British comic strip letterers Bill Nuttall (and Tom Frame) Starkings began his UK career by lettering in 2000 AD’s Future Shocks as well as various Warrior strips. He then moved to Marvel UK, where he was a letterer for Zoids in Spider-Man Weekly as well as Transformers. After that, he became an editor at the company in late 1980s. He edited titles such as Death’s Head, Dragon’s Claws and others. He resigned from lettering in the early 1990s and found work in the larger American comic-book industry.
