Tounkara was born in Blanes Girona, Catalonia to Senegalese parents. He began playing football at FC Barcelona’s youth academy. He was then loaned to Centre D’Esports Farners, Selva in 2011. Tounkara’s Barcelona contract contained a 3 million Euro release clause, but injuries led to the club losing interest in the striker.
Tounkara can represent both Spain or Senegal at the international level. He was called up to the Spanish under-17 team in 2012. Tounkara made the decision to play for Senegal four years later.
In July 2015, Mamadou Tounkara was transferred to Crotone on loan. The deal included a buy-out option for Crotone, while Lazio have a buy-back option.
