Yasmin Farooq, an American rowing coach and coxswain, was born November 25, 1965 in Golden Valley (Minnesota). In 1984, she graduated Waupun High School at Waupun in Wisconsin. She went to the University of Wisconsin, where she began coxing in 1984. Her senior year saw her being voted Captain and MVP. She placed 6th in women’s 8 at the 1992 Summer Olympics, and 4th in women’s 8 at the 1996 Summer Olympics.
Farooq was the coach for the United States Under 23 women’s eight, which won a gold medal in the Under 23 World Championships in Trakai (Lituania) in 2012.
In 2016, after leading the Cardinal to a 4th-place finish at the NCAA’s, Farooq resigned to become head coach at the University of Washington. In her 10 years at Stanford, Farooq led her crews to five NCAA podium finishes. Under Farooq, 138 Cardinal rowers earned Academic All-Pac-12 honors and 74 were named CRCA Scholar-Athletes. 28 Stanford rowers during her tenure were named CRCA All-America.
In her first season at Washington, Farooq led the Huskies to the Pac-12 Championship and the 2017 NCAA Championship. Washington won all three grand finals, accomplishing that sweep for the first time in the 21-year history of the NCAA Regatta. The championship was the Huskies’ fourth NCAA rowing title and their first since 2001. In winning the title, Farooq became both the first coach to win an NCAA rowing championship in her first season with the winning program and the first to win it as head coach of two different schools. The UW’s rowing championship was also the 500th team championship to be won by a Pac-12 Conference program. At season’s end, Farooq was named Pac-12 Coach of the Year and also the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) national coach of the year.
Farooq has coached several Stanford Olympians, including Elle Logan, a NCAA champion (2009) and three-time world champion. She is also a three-time Olympic gold medalist. Logan was the Pac-12 Women’s Rower Champion of the Century in 2016. Farooq was also the Stanford coach of 2016 Olympian Grace Luczak. Luczak was also a Stanford NCAA Championship team member in 2009. She is a three-time World Champion (2013), 2014, and 2015 as a member the U.S. women’s eight and four. Luczak was a member of the U.S. women’s pair that placed 4th at Rio de Janeiro Games.

Farooq was the rowing commentator at NBC’s Olympic broadcasts. She worked in Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008., and London 2012. Farooq was also the rowing analyst at NBC’s Universal Sports. She covered the World Cup regattas as well as the World Championships.
Farooq was appointed the Stanford University women’s rowing coach in 2006. The Stanford Varsity Eight won a silver medal in the NCAA Championships and Farooq was named Pac-10 Coaches of the Year. She led the team to Stanford’s first NCAA Team Title for rowing in 2009. In the grand final, the Stanford varsity eight set a new NCAA record at 6:11.95. In 2009, Farooq also won the Rowing News Coach of Year Award and the Joy of Sculling Coaches Conference Award as University Women’s Coach of Year. Although Stanford was tied with Brown University in the NCAA team standings in 2011, they lost the tiebreaker by.05 at the first varsity 8 grand final.
In 2014, Farooq led the Cardinal women to their first Pac-12 Conference Title. Stanford swept all three varsity events. The Cardinal went on to finish fourth at the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, IN. Farooq was named Pac-12 Coach of the Year. She was also inducted in the National Rowing Hall of Fame for her contributions to the US National Rowing Team as a coxswain.
