Armando ended his career at the end of the 2009-2010 season, after appearing in three games (two for the cup as well as the final stage of the league). His final appearance – on the 15th of May 2010 in the match against Racing de Santander – set records for the club’s longest-running player with a age of 39 years and 119 days. He was then appointed to the Athletic’s coaching staff for the next season.

Armando is a native of Sopelana, Biscay. After playing for several clubs from the lower leagues and an rather unassuming period of three years in the second division in Deportivo Alaves, he spent nine years in Cadiz CF, being the second-tier’s Zamora in 2004-05. He was also the first-choice during the entire subsequent seasons’ La Liga, as the Andalusians were immediately deported back.
On January 8, 2008 Cadiz was loaned Armando for a month to Athletic Bilbao, which had been without first-choice Gorka Iraizoz over the course of six months due to knee injuries. When they played an away game in the match against Real Betis on 15 March the player was struck by the bottle of an opponent fan while his team was ahead at 2-1, and with just 20 minutes left and he required six stitches for the wound that was just inches above the eye. Athletic was later awarded the victory from the Royal Spanish Football Federation.
In October 2016, Armando was acting as goalkeeping coach for CD Basconia (Athletic Bilbao’s youth farm team) in a match against CD Vitoria in which one of the opposition goalscorers was his son Alain. The young midfielder repeated the feat in the return fixture, in March 2017.
