Mai Kuraki (Cang Ma Yi / Kuraki Mai), a Japanese singer-songwriter and record producer, is known for her Japanese pop and R&B songs. Mai Kuraki was born October 28, 1982 in Funabashi (Chiba). Kuraki made her debut in 1999 with “Love, Day After Tomorrow” as her first single. Her debut album Delicious Way debuted at number one in 2000. It sold more than 2,210,000 copies its first week. Kuraki is one the few Japanese female artists to have four of their first studio albums debut at the top of Oricon’s album charts.
Kuraki began 2002 with “Winter Bells”, her 11th single. “Winter Bells”, which debuted at the top of the charts, was the tenth opening track for the anime adaptation to Detective Conan’s manga. Two singles were released by Kuraki before her third album Fairy Tale was released in October 2002: “Feel Fine!” Both singles, “Like a Star in the Night (April)) and “Feel Fine!” (September), reached the Top 2. Fairy Tale, like its predecessors, debuted at the top of the Oricon charts. The Japan Gold Disc Awards awarded the album the “Rock & Pop Album of the Year” prize. Kuraki tried again to enter the U.S. market. Her debut album in English, Secret of My Heart was released. Unfortunately, the single “Baby I Like”, did not chart.
In 2004 on New Year’s Day, Kuraki released her first greatest hits album, Wish You the Best. The album debuted atop the chart and was certified million and was her last album to achieve that status. After Wish You the Best, she released her fifth studio album, Fuse of Love in 2005. The album spawned four singles: “Ashita e Kakeru Hashi” (明日へ架ける橋 ) (2004), “Love, Needing”, “Dancing” and “P.S My Sunshine” (all released in 2005). “Ashita e Kakeru Hashi” debuted in the Top 3; while the others debuted outside the Top 3, a first for Kuraki. Fuse of Love debuted at number 3 on the album chart ending Kuraki’s number-one album streak. It was later certified gold by the RIAJ. In 2006, Kuraki released a new album, Diamond Wave. The album debuted at number 3 on the charts and was certified gold. The singles from the album, “Growing of My Heart” (2005), “Best of Hero” (ベスト オブ ヒーロー , Besuto Obu Hīrō) and “Diamond Wave” were Top 10 singles.
Kuraki ended the year with a new single, “Shiroi Yuki”, which reached number 4 on the single chart. In 2007, Kuraki released her last single under Giza Studio, “Season of Love”. The single charted at number 6. After releasing “Season of Love”, Kuraki was transferred from Giza Studio to its then newly launched sister label, Northern Music, whose artist roster also include Yumi Shizukusa (ex-Giza and Zain), the now-defunct idol group Sparkling Point, and one of her producers, Michael Africk. Under Northern she released her twenty- seventh single, “Silent Love: Open My Heart/Be With U” before releasing her seventh album, One Life on New Year’s Day 2008. “Silent Love: Open My Heart/Be With U” debuted at number 9 and One Life debuted at number 14, on their respective charts. One Life was certified gold by the RIAJ.

Kuraki’s first single, “Love, Day After Tomorrow”, was released on December 8, 1999. At number 18, the single reached the Oricon singles chart. After slowly climbing on the chart, “Love, Day After Tomorrow”, peaked at number 2 in March 2000. The success of “Love, Day After Tomorrow” was shared by her second and third singles, “Stay by My Side”, and “Secret of My Heart”. “Stay by My Side”, a single released March 15, 2000, debuted at the top of the Oricon charts. “Secret of My Heart,” a single released April 26, 2000, debuted at number 2. Perfect Crime was the number one album on the charts and was the artist’s second million-selling album. The RIAJ certified the album million and it was awarded “Rock album of year” along with her debut album. Kuraki’s last single, “Can’t Forget Your Love/Perfect Crime Single Edit”, was released a month after Perfect Crime had been released. It debuted at number 2 in the single charts.
Her fourth album, If I Believe, was released on July 9, 2003. Prior to the album’s release, Kuraki released four singles: “Make My Day” (2002), “Time After Time: Hana Mau Machi de”, “Kiss” and “Kaze no La La La”; all of which were Top 3 singles. If I Believe continued Kuraki’s number-one album streak and was certified 2x platinum.
