Nakamoto, an American judge and associate justice of Oregon’s Supreme Court was born May 24, 1960. Governor Kate Brown appointed her to the court. She previously served as an associate justice on the Oregon Court of Appeals between 2011 and 2016.
In 2001, she was vice-chair of the Oregon Board of Bar Examiners. She also served as chair of 2006’s affirmative actions committee of the Oregon State Bar.
In 2015, Governor Kate Brown named Nakamoto to the Oregon Supreme Court, to fill the vacancy created by Virginia Linder’s retirement. Her appointment made her the first Asian American to serve on the supreme court.
Nakamoto was a summer clerk to Helen J. Frye, United States District Judge in 1989.

Nakamoto was born and raised in Los Angeles. Nakamoto is the first in her family to go to college. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy from Wellesley College in 1982. She also attended the University of California at Berkeley (1980-81). In 1985, she received her Juris Doctor degree from New York University School of Law.
She worked in New York City at Bronx Legal Services from 1985 to 1987. In 1987 she moved to Oregon as a staff lawyer and the acting director of Marion-Polk Legal Aid Service. She joined Markowitz, Herbold, Glade & Mehlhaf in 1989, a Portland law office that specialized in business litigation. In the end, she became its managing shareholder. She was there until her 2011 appointment to the bench.
In 2011, governor Ted Kulongoski appointed Nakamoto to the Oregon Court of Appeals, to fill the seat created by Jack Landau’s appointment to the Oregon Supreme Court. She was elected unopposed to a six-year term at the 2012 election.
