Carlos Newton is one of the most popular and richest Mixed Martial Artist who was born on August 17, 1976 in The Valley, Anguilla. Carlos Newton, an Anguillian-born Canadian mixed martial artist, was born August 17, 1976. He is one of the first MMA pioneers. He is a former UFC Welterweight Champion as well as a Pride FC Japan MMA Legend. He was known as “The Ronin” and competed in some of the most prestigious MMA organizations, including UFC, Pride FC Japan MMA Legends, K-1, Shooto, IFL, K-1, Shooto, and most recently W-1. At Warrior MMA, Newmarket, Ontario, he is a 3rd degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt with his coach Terry Riggs. Newton is a fan favorite and a “Submission Masters” and has been called his “Dragon Ball Jiu- Jitsu”, his own fighting style, which combines Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with judo and wrestling. This was in honor of the Japanese manga Dragon Ball. Newton is the only MMA athlete to be allowed to compete simultaneously in both the UFC or Pride FC. This speaks volumes about his popularity. Newton MMA is his current gym.

Newton’s fourth- and fifth fights were his UFC debut at UFC 17. He defeated Bob Gilstrap, and lost a controversial decision against Dan Henderson that night. Newton’s greatest professional achievement was winning the UFC Welterweight Championship from Pat Miletich, May 2001. However, the reign was short-lived as Newton lost his title defense against Matt Hughes at UFC 34 in November 2001. Newton was in a triangle choke with Hughes. However, Hughes grabbed Newton and walked him around the corner, hitting Newton on the head. Hughes and Newton were both unconscious, but John McCarthy only saw Newton unconscious and gave Hughes victory. Hughes asked Hughes “What happened?”

Newton was set for a comeback fight at K-1’s HEROs MMA promotion against Melvin Manhoef at the Ariake Coliseum on August 5, but had to pull out of the fight at the last minute due to a torn ligament in his knee. He made a second attempt at a comeback in K-1 HEROs, this time facing Tokimitsu Ishizawa. Newton made short work of the Japanese fighter, needing only four punches to score the TKO victory in just 22 seconds. He then faced Shungo Oyama at Hero’s Korea 2007 where he lost by submission due to punches.

In 2009, after his win over Shonie Carter, he stated in an interview to Sherdog that he was anticipating his return to fighting abroad with particular interest in Japan. However, after one more fight in Australia, Newton decided, that after a successful fight career that spanned 14 years, it was finally time to take a break and focus on coaching.

Newton’s famed Japan fight career began with a victory over Erik Paulson, which made him the Vale Tudo Japan World Champion. After a few dominant fights with Shooto, he moved to PRIDE FC which is considered the best MMA show on the planet. Newton lost against Kazushi Sakuraba in a Pride Fighting Championships technical fight in June 1998. Today, the Sakuraba vs. Newton bout is a great classic fight and one of Jiu-jitsu’s greatest MMA fights. Both fighters became MMA stars thanks to this legendary fight. Newton continued in PRIDE Japan, where he won over Naoki Sano and Daijiro Moratsui. This was on the way to his stunning armbar victory over Jose Landi-Jons, who was at Pride 19 in February 2002. Pride President Naoto Matsui declared that Newton is now the PRIDE middle-weight Champion. Newton’s place in the history books was further confirmed by a split-decision win over Renzo Gracie at Pride Bushido 1 in October 2003.
