Her appointment to her position on the Oregon Supreme Court by Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski and was sworn into office on the 9th of October of 2006, to succeed Justice R. William Riggs who had retired. Walters became the first justice of female gender of the bench since 2003, when Susan M. Leeson left the court. In 2007 Walters was elected the President of the Uniform Law Commission, becoming the first female president of the organization. Walters was elected to an entire six-year term as a judge in the year 2008 and was elected again in 2014.
Walters was the president and founder of the Eugene law firm of Walters, Chanti & Zennache. She was awarded the Public Justice Award in 1998. received the Public Justice Award by the Oregon Trial Lawyers. She was delegate in the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws and as an affiliate of the American Law Institute. In private practice, she was a specialist in employment law and labor law. She represented handicapped golfer Casey Martin in his lawsuit against the PGA Tour to allow Martin to utilize a golf cart for tournaments.
