Lyndon Watts is one of the most popular and richest Bassoonist who was born on January 19, 1976 in Australia. Lyndon Jeffrey Frank Watts, a bassoonist from Australia, was born 19 January 1976. He is the principal bassoonist at the Munchner Philharmoniker as well as an academic teacher.

He was a chamber musician and commissioned the first quartet for a woodwind instrument, and string trio. The “Finnische Quartette”, a quartet for a string instrument, was performed by Jorg Duda in 2001. He premiered the Bassoon Quintet by Graham Waterhouse at Gasteig in 2003. He performed in many recitals at the 2009 IDRS conference, Birmingham, including with Thomas Eberhardt Lacrimosa, bassoonist of Louis Andriessen, Holliger’s Three Pieces, Sofia Gubaidulina’s Duo for two basseons, and Bernd Redmann’s Secret doors for two basseons and an orchestra. He participated in the festival of contemporary musical Klangaktionen in Munich in December 2009. Redmann’s Migrant, a piece for bassoon/string quartet, was premiered in Munich by him in 2011.

Watts was one of 16 bassoonists in the concert The Proud Bassoon, celebrating William Waterhouse on 16 April 2011 in Wigmore Hall. He played Waterhouse’s arrangement for two bassoon choirs of Giovanni Gabrieli’s Sonata Pian’ e Forte, Anton Reicha’s Quintet for bassoon and strings, on an 1807 instrument from Waterhouse’s collection, and the Divertissement for bassoon and string quintet of Jean Francaix, dedicated to Waterhouse.

Watts has been the Munchner Philharmoniker’s principal bassoonist since 1998. He has performed solo with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Munchener Kammerorchester. He performed with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at the 2004 International Double Reed Society conference. He supports the Australian World Orchestra, which was founded in 2010.

Watts studied bassoon in 1988. He completed his senior school education at Newington College, Newington College, in 1993. From 1992 to 1993, he collaborated with Sydney Symphony Orchestra and won prizes at Australian competitions. He studied at the Hochschule fur Musik und Theater Munchen from 1994 to 2000 and received his master’s degree.

Watts was awarded the pacem international music competition in terris Bayreuth in 1997. He was awarded the Yamaha Scholarship to Woodwind Instruments in

2000. This scholarship allowed him to study Baroque basseon with Alberto Grazzi, Verona, from 2001 to 2005. He was awarded a third prize in 2002’s ARD International Music Competition. He also received an award for “best interpretation” of Heinz Holliger’s commissioned work Klaus-ur from Three Pieces For Bassoon. The Bayerischer Rundfunk recorded Holliger’s composition on the CD 21st Century Instrumental Solos. This is a compilation of works commissioned for the ARD competition from 2002 to 2003. He also performs Mozart’s bassoon concerto on another recording of 2002 prizewinners.

Watts taught the bassoon at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München between 2002 and 2007, and has worked as a professor at the Bern University of the Arts since October 2005. He has conducted regular courses in Switzerland and Germany, and masterclasses in England, Portugal, Australia, Japan, China and Korea, such as a masterclass of the Australasian Double Reed Society in

2008. He has been a teacher for the Junge Münchner Philharmonie.
