Joanne Idonia Eccles MBE (born 16 February 1989) is an British Equestrian competing in vaulting, a discipline that she competes at. She took home Gold medals at the ladies’ single events at the 2009 European Championship and the 2010 FEI World Equestrian Games. Hannah’s sister Hannah also competes for Great Britain in vaulting.

Eccles was the winner of her first World Equestrian games in Kentucky in the year 2010. She was able to keep her title in the World Equestrian Games in Caen in 2014.

Eccles was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2017 Birthday Honours for services to equestrian vaulting.

In her time as a member of the team Eccles was also involved in individual events. In 2004, she was chosen to be one of the individual females selected to compete for Great Britain. This was her first time competing in an individual championship and she was 19th in her age group, and was the youngest of her class. Joanne was selected again for the following three years, finishing thirteenth overall on the list in Europe in 2005, and 11th in WEG in 2006 fourth in Europe in 2007. Following 2007 Joanne was confronted with the choice of choosing between one-on-one or team events because she was too old to participate in both. Joanne eventually chose to compete competing in her own events, and placed 5th in the World Championships that year. In 2008 the team was invited for compete in the Masters in Leipzig and won and was first at Saumar during Easter. In the CVI */** in Ermelo, Eccles won the Senior class, which was an unprecedented feat in Great Britain. Then she placed 5th at the World Championships, granting her the British Female Individual Champion title. She also took home numerous titles as a pair (pas de two) along with the sister Hannah Eccles.

Eccles first started vaulting at age eight. Her friends were vaulters and encouraged them to “come and try”. At the time, she owned one horse, which was shared by her sister and brother and was regularly involved in Highland dancing. But when she started vaulting she decided to make it her main interest. She was a vaulter with the club for a year, before being invited to be part of in the Scottish Equestrian Vaulting squad. She was a reserve vaulter throughout the time, Eccles traveled with the team to the World Equestrian Games (WEG) in Rome in 1998. As of 1999, she was a team flyer , and was part of the team that was selected as the representative of Great Britain at the European Championships. As she got older, she was also the “prop” or “base” but was still an integral part of the team. As a member of the Scottish Equestrian Vaulting Team, she was a representative of Great Britain every year up to 2007 (excl. in 2001 for the foot and mouth). They finished 4th in their European Championships in 2005, and 5th at the WEG in 2006.

Her father John Eccles, brought his own horse to train in vaulting and the Eccles’s formed their own club, called the Wee County Vaulters. The first team consisted of just three vaulters, one horse and John as well as coaching the team. In the past the number of players has increased to 26 vaulters as well as two horses of nationality One international horse, as well as several coaches including Joanne.
