Lucy Young was born on September 9, 1954 in Waterbury, Connecticut. Shepaug Valley High School, Washington, Connecticut was where she grew up. Lucy was awarded a Navy ROTC scholarship for four years to Purdue University, where she received a B.S. in 1976. degree. She was commissioned as an Ensign in US Navy after graduation and sent to 42d Attack Squadron, VA-42, at NAS Oceana. Lucy Young was chosen for flight training in August 1997. She reported to Pensacola in Florida in October 1976. After flying the T-28 Trojan, and the T-44 King Air in flight training, ENS Young was awarded her wings of gold. She was then selected for Jet aircraft transition training.

Lucy Young started training in May 1986 as a Boeing 727 flight engineer (under Piedmont Airlines), in Winston-Salem North Carolina. She was promoted to First Officer on the Boeing 737 in October 1987. Lucy was promoted to Commander in July 1991 and transferred to VTU6767 at NAS Atlanta, March 1992. CDR Young, who served six years in VR-46, accumulated more than 1600 hours in the C-9. She is also a Transport Aircraft Commandant with over water and international qualifications. She is a Desert Shield/Storm veteran and flew missions in Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Greece during that conflict.

In 1978, the United States Air Force graduated the first female pilots in any type aircraft.
