Lucia Ronchetti studied composition at the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia, Rome. She also participated in composition seminars with Sylvano Busti at the Scuola di Muzica of Fiesole (1981-1985) and Salvatore Sciarrino (1988-1989). She received her degree from the Sapienza University in Rome in humanities. In 1987 she presented a dissertation about Bruno Maderna’s orchestral compositions. She was awarded a Diplome d’Etudes Approfondies in 1991. She received a Diplome d’Etudes Approfondies (D.E.A.) in aesthetics at the University of Paris I–Sorbonne. Francois Lesure, her musicology instructor at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes en Sorbonne, awarded her a doctorate. Her thesis was on the orchestral style and Wagnerian influence of late 19th- century French orchestral composition. She attended composition seminars in Paris with Gerard Grisey (1993-1996) and participated in the annual computer music classes at IRCAM (1997), under the guidance of Tristan Murail. Tristan Murail invited her to be a Fulbright Fellow (Visiting Scholar) at Columbia University’s Music Department in 2005.

In 1998, she began collaborating with Folkmar Hein on various productions at Berlin Institute of Technology (TUB). She began working at the Experimentalstudio of Freiburg in 2003. There she created a cycle of compositions exploring the sound configuration of the viola. It was presented in Berlin (Festival Ultrashall 2007, 2007), and is called “Xylocopa Violacea (CD Stradivarius 2010,).
