Ratcliffe was a graduate of his time at the University of Birmingham with a degree in chemical engineering in 1974. The university graduated him from London Business School in 1980 and gave PS25m to the school in the year 2016.

His first position was with the oil giant Esso however, he decided to further develop his expertise in finance by pursuing a degree in the field of management accounting.
