In 2003, Leakey married Prince Emmanuel de Merode, a Belgian primatologist. By marriage, she is titled princesse de Merode. They have two daughters.

Leakey received her International Baccalaureate degree from United World College of the Atlantic, and a Bachelor of Science in biology and geology from the University of Bristol. In 2001, she received her PhD from University College London.

Princess Louise de Merode (nee Leakey; born 21 March 1972), is a Kenyan paleontologist, anthropologist and historian. She is a researcher and field worker on human fossils in Eastern Africa.

Leakey became a co-leader for paleontological expeditions to northern Kenya in 1993 with her mother. Some of the most important hominid fossil discoveries in the last two decades have been made by the Koobi Fora project. The most recent is Kenyanthropus platyops.
