On November 15, 2018, President Donald Trump nominated Sola to the Federal Maritime Commission. He was confirmed by the United States Senate the following day. He was sworn in to office during the government shutdown on January 23, 2019, for a 5-year term that expires June 30, 2023.

Sola ran previously for the United States House of Representatives slot for Florida’s 24thCongressional district as a Republican candidate against Democratic Representative Frederica Wilkinson. Both candidates were eliminated from the ballot, which was cited by some as the reason for the 2018 U.S. Senate election recount. Sola has made it clear that he will not be running for the 26th district of Florida in 2020.
