She grew up in Wurzburg where she studied church music, and later worked as a musician at Wurzburg Cathedral. Lotte Lehmann, a voice teacher, discovered her voice at age 27 and trained her.

Internationally, she was recognized when she performed as Brangane in Tristan und Isolde at the 1994 Bayreuth Festival. There she also performed Siegrune, Waltraute and the second Norne from Der Ring des Nibelungen. She sang at Teatro Real Madrid, La Scala, Teatro Real Madrid and Liceu in Barcelona.

Braun has been a professor of voice at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln and the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München from 2010.

In soprano range, she appeared as Isolde, conducted by Andris Nelsons, in Birmingham and Paris. She performed the part first on stage at the Nürnberg Opera in 2012, conducted by Marcus Bosch. She appeared as the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier by Strauss.

Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe and Volksoper in Vienna were some of her theatre experiences. She was a member the Nationaltheater Mannheim from 1993 to 2000. There she played several mezzo-soprano roles, including those by Wagner and Verdi.
