Mary Peters, a competitor in her sport, inspired her to start athletics at age 10.
She won the U.K. 100/200 meters Championships in 1981 and a bronze medal at European Junior Championships in 1982.
In 1985 she won the Scottish 400 metres championship, and the AAA’s Indoor 400 title.
At 16 years old, Macdonald accompanied the British team to 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. She had set a British Junior record (51.16 seconds) and ran the 400m. She qualified for the Olympic final, finishing 8th in 52.40 seconds. She was part of the 4x400m relay team, which won the Olympic bronze medal.

Macdonald was a schoolgirl runner who was British School Girl Champion in both the 100/300 meters. After winning the AAA’S indoor 60m championship, Macdonald became a junior runner and won the Junior indoor 400m title a year later.
She won the AAA’S Junior Championships at 100, 400, and 200 metres in 1979 and 2000 respectively. She was also the AAA Indoor 200m Champion and U.K. Champion in 1980.
Macdonald also went with the Scottish team to Brisbane for the 1982 Commonwealth Games where again she won a bronze medal with the 4×400 relay team. She was eliminated in the heats of the Athens European Championships in
