Finch flew a 1935 Lockheed Electra 10E that was restored to Earhart’s specifications. For historical purposes, she believed that the flight should have been of the same type as Earhart’s. She spent three years trying to find the parts from one of two planes that were still in existence. Neither was flight-worthy. It was found in a garage near Chippewa Falls. It had been there for many years. There were many parts missing so the engines and wings were removed and sold. The plane was not only broken but also rusted and corroded. Finch spent $330,000, most of her savings, to buy the hulk to transport it back to Texas.
Finch’s flight plan was inspired by Amelia Earhart. It included stops at 36 locations in 18 countries. It took 73 days to complete and was completed at Oakland Airport on May 28th. Her cruising speed was only 90 miles an hour during the 26,000-mile trip. Finch flew 8-12 hours per hour. Finch flew at a height of below 10,000 feet (3,900 m) during most of her flight in the Electra cabin.
