Tretikov was named executive director of Wikimedia Foundation in May 2014. She succeeded Sue Gardner. She took over the position on June 1, 2014. Before her appointment, she had only edited Wikipedia once. Tretikov quit the Wikimedia Foundation due to disagreements with staff and the controversial Knowledge Engine project. Her last day was March 31, 2016. Katherine Maher succeeded her in March 2016.
