After signing a one-year contract extension with Walsall in July 2016, he was loaned to Chester for a season. He played 15 games in the National League, including six consecutive clean sheets between September & October.

Roberts finally established himself as Walsall’s first-choice goalkeeper during the 2017–18 season, making 28 appearances in all competitions and being rewarded with a new two-and-a-half-year contract on 20 February 2018. He signed a new contract in November 2019.

Roberts was loaned to Gresley for three months on 14 August 2015. Walsall recalled Roberts in October. He joined the matchday squad as an unutilized substitute in the Saddlers’ win over Burton on October 10, 2015. Six days later Roberts signed a one month loan to Rugby. Before returning to Walsall, he made six appearances at the club.
