Toshney’s under-17 debut was in a 3-2 defeat against France in October 2008. He then participated in Scotland’s 3-1 win over Slovakia a month later. Toshney was the first player to make his debut for Scotland’s national under-21 football team in March 2012. Toshney scored his debut goal for Scotland’s under-21 football team in April 2012.

After leaving Celtic in the summer of 2014, Toshney spent time on trial at Hearts and Hibs.

Having been released by Ross County, Toshney signed for Cowdenbeath on 3 February 2015, signing a contract until the end of the 2014–15 season.

In January 2012, Toshney was lent to Kilmarnock. Toshney made his debut in a 1-1 draw against Dunfermline on February 7, 2012. He played the entire 90 minutes. Toshney returned four days later in a 1-1 draw against Hearts. Paul Heffernan scored the winning goal after Toshney’s header from a corner was stopped on the line. Toshney began his third match in succession the next week, against Celtic’s Old Firm rivals Rangers at Ibrox Stadium. Kilmarnock won the match 1-0 thanks to Dean Shiels. Toshney began again, with Kilmarnock taking on Dundee United. Kilmarnock lost four goals after Liam Kelly was sent off. Due to a groin strain, Toshney was unable to play in Kilmarnock’s two next matches. Kenny Shiels, the manager, was uncertain whether Toshney would be allowed to return to the team after his recovery. He would not be eligible for the match against Celtic in the 2012 Scottish League Cup Final. Shiels decided to play Toshney in that match. It was a 1-1 draw against Inverness CT Kimarnock. Celtic won the League Cup 1-0.
