Dick Wingate (born April 6 1952 New Haven, CT) is an American music industry executive and director of digital entertainment. He is currently the principal Director of DEV Advisors, a digital entertainment company that provides advice to service providers and app developers, as well as investors and content owners. He is a board member as well as a partner of New York-based Big House Music Publishing and is a life-long membership of NARAS (Grammys).

The year 1986 saw Dick Asher, the new president/CEO of PolyGram Records hired Wingate as the Senior Vice President of A&R in which he took on charge of all US releases , both for domestic and foreign artists. His tenure was marked by successes. included the growth of Bon Jovi from Gold(500K) unit sales to 10x Platinum on Slippery When Wet, and 7 million in New Jersey; multi-platinum success with Cinderella’s Night Songs and Long Cold Winter John Mellencamp. and the signing to Robert Cray (platinum album and Grammy), LA Guns, The Fat Boys, Ivan Neville and Mother Love Bone (which was later to be Pearl Jam). In the latter half of 1989, Wingate left PolyGram and in early 1990, he had the majority of the top management team including the CEO Dick Asher, head of marketing Jim Urie and GM Bob Jamieson.

Wingate returned to the record label Arista Records in June 1994 as Senior VP of Marketing to work directly for Clive Davis. At Arista over the next two years he promoted artists including TLC, The Notorious B.I.G., Sarah McLachlan, Annie Lennox, Toni Braxton, Boys on the Side’s soundtrack, Real McCoy, Crash Test Dummies, Barry Manilow, Kenny G and Ace of Base.

In 1996, he moved to Arista’s corporate parent, BMG North America as New Media Consultant, helping to develop BMG’s online & internet strategy. At BMG, he completed a deal with AOL Liquid Audio became a consulting client in 1997, along with music database provider Muze and EMCI.

In the latter half of 1975 Wingate was recruited by Columbia Records as their Product Manager and soon became the manager of preference for the most famous as well as sensitive musicians. In his time at Columbia as Product Manager, he was responsible for Springsteen’s Darkness on the Edge of Town, Pink Floyd – Animals David Gilmour’s debut solo album, Nick Lowe – Pure Pop for Now People, Peter Tosh’s Legalize It & Equal Rights albums and the three-album first marketing campaign for Elvis Costello’s – My Goal is Real The Year of the Model as well as Armed Forces. His association with Springsteen was described in Dave Marsh’s official biographical work, Born to Run, with a photo showing Springsteen and Wingate on the press while their covers for Darkness on the Edge of Town were being printed.

As a teen, Wingate frequently went to concerts , including Cream, The Beach Boys, The Jeff Beck Group which included Rod Stewart, The Rolling Stones and The Rolling Stones and a Doors show at New Haven in which Jim Morrison was detained at the stage in December 1967. He was in the year 1970 when he began his studies as an undergraduate student in Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Then, he joined WBRU-FM initially as a DJ before moving to music director in the year 1972, and as Program Director by 1973. Wingate was introduced to Bruce Springsteen, who visited the station. A few years later, the singer would become his merchandise manager.

After graduating in 1974, Wingate moved to NYC as Director of East Coast Promotions / Operations for the independent label Chess / Janus Records and collaborated with artists Al Stewart, Camel, Caravan and Muddy Waters. He also played a weekly DJ slot on WPLR-FM in New Haven, where he first played ‘Born to Run for Southern Connecticut listeners.

In 1990, Wingate began consulting InTouch Group of San Francisco, CA and became VP of Market and Business Development. InTouch developed the i-Station which married music previewing with interactive technology, database management and direct marketing. He acquired music catalogs from over 250 labels, developed and managed the database, helped negotiate an agreement with Billboard Magazine to feature interactive Billboard music charts on the i-Station, and organized and conducted demonstration meetings for label executives, investors, market researchers, retailers, press and analysts. The systems proved prohibitively expensive to produce and maintain and eventually the company went into re-organization in February, 1996. Wingate left in mid-1994 to return to Arista.
