Cook was awarded consensus All-American recognition in 1975 and was a first- team All-American 1974. In his freshman year, 1972 Cook recorded sixteen tackles (three for loss) and resulted in two Fumbles. In 1973, Cook made 18 tackles and was recognized for two causing Fumbles. In 1974, his debut as an All-America player, he recorded eighty-one tackles (10 for the loss) including six of them being sacks. He was recognized with two forced fumbles, and also blocked three kicks.

With his future sports career in doubt, Cook ended up being selected in the tenth round (290th overall pick) of the 1976 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys, who gambled he could recover.
