Cheveldae (born 15 February 1968) is a former professional goalie in ice hockey. In the course of his ten-year National Hockey League career, He played for The Detroit Red Wings, Winnipeg Jets as well as the Boston Bruins.
While Detroit’s goaltending team would stay the same for the 1990-91 season, Cheveldae made it to on the chart of depths, transitioning between goaltending for the AHL to joining Detroit’s goaltending duo with Hanlon and Stefan. Stefan was afflicted with career-ending injuries. St. Laurent never ascended beyond his role as third goalie at the NHL level, despite his small accomplishments in the league.
On August 27, 1996, Cheveldae signed with the Boston Bruins. Cheveldae served two games that season while spending most of his time on loan to the Fort Wayne Komets of the International Hockey League. Cheveldae was not re-signed at the end of the season.
While in Winnipeg, Cheveldae never achieved the level of success he had with the Red Wings. While he served the Jets as starting goaltender during the abbreviated season in 1994–95 and the beginning of the 1995–96 season, the Jets eventually opted to go with Nikolai Khabibulin as their starter. Cheveldae was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers on February 27, 1996, for Dominic Roussel, and he was assigned to the minor league affiliate Hershey Bears.
From the 1990-91 season until the 1992-93 season Cheveldae was Detroit’s primary goalie. Since Detroit not finding an unwavering backup, Cheveldae was the goalie’s workhorse during those seasons, playing more than 65 games during each of those seasons . He also played 72 games over the 1991-92 campaign, which earned the right to participate at the 1992 NHL All-Star Game. Although Cheveldae enjoyed success in games in the season’s regular time, his team never make it into the playoffs in the two seasons, which left Cheveldae to be blamed for the team’s failure to make it when it came to the playoffs.

Cheveldae started playing his first junior hockey his career during 1985 and 1986 WHL campaign with the Saskatoon Blades. Cheveldae was picked at the end of the 4th Round (64th overall) of the Detroit Red Wings in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft. Cheveldae continued to play for the Blades until the close of the 1987-88 campaign before moving to the ranks of professional.
For the 1988-89 season Cheveldae played for his Red Wings’ minor league affiliate known as The Adirondack Red Wings, in the American Hockey League. His skill level was enough to earn him a promotion to the NHL and he played two games as a netminder in the Red Wings, and made the fourth goalie of the Red Wings roster behind Greg Stefan, Glen Hanlon and Sam St. Laurent.
In the 1993–94 Season, Chris Osgood emerged from the minors to become Detroit’s new starting goaltender. Despite having a successful season, Cheveldae ended up traded to the Winnipeg Jets as part of a package deal which brought Bob Essensa and Sergei Bautin to Detroit on March 8, 1994. Cheveldae missed the playoffs with the Jets.
