Leila Alaoui Biography

Leila Alaoui is one of the most popular and richest Photographer who was born on July 10, 1982 in Paris, Île-de-France, France. Alaoui believed that art and photography could be utilized for social activism, and could be utilized to “reflecting and questioning society”. In the end she decided to focus on the social and national realities of ethnicity and diversity as well as and migration and displacement. For this, she employed images, reports as well as studio-style video installation. One of her preferred methods was to set up the studio on wheels in a public space such as a square in a market and then invite people to take pictures. Alaoui claimed that the sources for this style of photography based on portraits came from the work of Robert Frank, which depicted Americans during the post-war era and in films like The Americans (1958). Alaoui frequently emphasizes her subjects and minimizes the background in some of her portraits.

She was asked from the Danish Refugee Council to create photographs of refugees living in Lebanon. The project was named “Natreen” (“We Wait”). She produced an audiovisual installation titled “Crossings”, describing the travels of Moroccans who travel to Europe. The year 2015 was the time she finished an assignment with photographs “Everyday Heroes of Syria” located which was based in Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq with a focus specifically on Syrians that live within refugee camps. The project was finished by the Danish Refugee Council, the European Commission Humanitarian Aid Office and ActionAid.

Alaoui was hired by UN Women and Amnesty International to work on a photographic assignment on women’s rights in Burkina Faso. On January 16, 2016, during her first week working on the assignment, she was seriously wounded by gunshots while sitting in a parked car with her driver outside the Cappuccino café whilst gunmen attacked the Cappucino and the Splendid Hotel. Mahamadi Ouédraogo, the driver, sustained critical injuries and died in the vehicle. Alaoui was quickly taken to a hospital and seemed initially in a stable condition following an operation. She died three days later of a heart attack. Her remains were flown to Morocco at the expense of King Mohammed VI of Morocco.
