Laurie Spina is one of the most popular and richest Rugby League Player who was born on May 21, 1963 in Wingham, New South Wales, Australia. Laurie Joseph Spina (born 21 May 1963) is an Australian former professional footballer in the rugby league and commentator on the sport. The year 1995 was the time Spina served as the team’s inaugural captain. In 1987, a lot of judges considered that Spina was likely to be a representative for Queensland for the 1987 State of Origin series after participating in an State of Origin trial played at Lang Park between a Queensland Residents team and an N.S.W.-based Residents team. As a player for the New South Wales side, Spina played alongside Sam Backo who was another Ingham product. It was believed that he would be more successful than his halfback counterpart, Ipswich’s Allan Langer. Queensland Captain Wally Lewis later said both the coach and Wayne Bennett had supported Spina however, he was subsequently exiled from the Maroons team for the match and did not take part in a game with the team.

In 1995, at age 31, Spina returned to first grade, being named the inaugural captain of the newly-introduced North Queensland Cowboys in the Australian Rugby League competition. On 11 March 1995, he led the side out for their first ever game, a 32–16 loss at home to the Canterbury Bulldogs. He captained the side in their first ever win, a 14–10 victory over the Illawarra Steelers in Wollongong. Spina retired at the end of the 1995 season, playing 13 games and scoring one try for the Cowboys.

Following his retirement, Spina became a commentator for ABC Radio Grandstand in Townsville. Since 1996, the Laurie Spina Shield, a two-day carnival featuring a number of under-11 sides from around Australia, has been contested in Townsville. In 2016, the carnival featured 64 teams from around regional Queensland, south east Queensland, the Northern Territory and South Australia.

He joined the club in 1985. signed with in 1985 with the Eastern Suburbs Roosters and would play for five seasons at the team. In his debut season, he played 23 of his 24 halfback games. He was the first halfback for the majority of his time with the Roosters and started at least 89 games with the position.

The family was born in Ingham, Queensland, Spina was a star player in his time in junior football at the Herbert River local competition. His dedication to the game led to the debut Foley Shield match against previous year’s title holders, Mount Isa, in which he took home the man of the match. In 1982 the year 1982, he was part the Herbert River undefeated squad who drew against Townsville during the Foley Shield final.
