Kay McLaren was born–the eldest of four daughters — in Sydney on January 25, 1954, Cottee grew up in the southern Sydney suburb of Sans Souci. Her parents were an aristocratic family who owned yachts and took sailing for the first time at just a few weeks old. In secondary school she went to Moorefield Girls High School in Kogarah, New South Wales.
Since 1991 Cottee became a member of the advisory committee that was part of the Australian National Maritime Museum. She served as chair for the institution from 1995 to 2001. The museum was closed in 2000. Blackmores First Lady, was purchased by the museum and put in permanent display.
Cottee writes two of her own books. First Lady, her first novel, First Lady, was published by Macmillan in 1989. It was followed by her second novel, All at Sea on Land came out through Pan Macmillan in 1998, about her life over the decade since her journey.

Kay Cottee, AO (born 25th January, 1954) is an Australian sailors, she was the very first female to complete an unaided, single-handed and unaided circumnavigation around the globe. She accomplished this feat in 1988 on her 37-foot (11 meters) boat, Blackmores First Lady. It took around 189 days.
On June 5, 1988, at the age of 34 Kay Cottee became the first woman to circumnavigate the globe completely on her own without assistance when she set sail across Sydney heads. She was welcomed by thousands of well-wishers. Cottee had quit the harbour just 189 days earlier on the 29th of November, 1987.
