Hairston was selected to the New England Patriots in the sixth round (208th overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft. On August 1, 2007, Hairston was waived/injured by the Patriots and cleared waivers and then designated as injured reserve. Hairston settled a claim for injury with the team, and was released on the 11th of September.

Hairston was a student at Rutgers University for three seasons. He was a back- up to the Scarlet Knights while playing there before making the move to CCSU. While at CCSU at the time of his transfer, Hairston established a record at the school for highest number of running yards in a single year with more than 1,800. Hairston was also the first player from CCSU to be drafted for any NFL team.
On the 4th of October on the 4th of October, 2007 Hairston was assigned to the practice team from the Indianapolis Colts. Then, in October, Hairston was released from the Colts. He was signed by the Colts after the season ended, but was released by the team on June 16, 2008.
