Julie Brown is one of the most popular and richest Marathon Runner who was born on February 4, 1955 in Van Nuys, California, United States. Julie Ann Brown (born February 4 1955) is an American retired distance runner. She was the winner of the IAAF World Cross Country Championship in 1975. She was also a representative of America in the United States in the 1984 Summer Olympics in the women’s marathon. She finished 36th.

In 1979, at the Pan American Games, Brown took home three silver medals at the 1979 Pan American Games, winning second place in the 800 , 1500 and 3000 meters.

She entered the marathon at the inaugural 1983 World Championships in Athletics, but failed to finish the competition.

Brown concentrated on track and cross-country running prior to the Olympic trials but a victory in the Avon Women’s Marathon in 1983 convinced her that she could qualify for the Olympic marathon team. She ran a conservative race staying in the pack until the midway point and broke away finishing second, 37 seconds behind the Olympic trials winner, Joan Benoit Samuelson. She broke the 10,000 metres world record setting a time of 35:00.4 minutes in 1975.

Brown established the American women’s marathon record in the Nike OTC Marathon in 1978 with a time of 2:36.23.

Brown was born in Billings, Montana, and participated in a variety of distance events and won several state championships while at Billings Senior High School. She was a participant in the 880-yard running event, winning the state championship three consecutive years beginning in 1970. She is the holder of the All-State record for the 880-yard run with a duration of 2:11.0. She also took home two 440-yard race championships and during the final year of her career, she won the state cross-country champion too.

Brown took home the IAAF World Cross Country Championship in 1975, becoming she was the very first American woman to win the event. Brown won the race with 13:42, five seconds faster than Bronislawa Ludwichowska of Poland.

Brown qualified for the 1980 Summer Olympics in the 800 meters and 1500 meters but did not compete due to the boycott of the Olympics. She was one of 461 athletes to receive a Congressional Gold Medal instead. She did compete in the 1984 Olympics in the marathon, placing 36th.
