Melendez was incarcerated for a total of 17 years, 8 months and one full day imprisonment prior to his release from Union Correctional Institution on January 3rd 2002. After his release, he was awarded an amount of $100 through the government. He hasn’t received any additional compensation, nor has he received an apology or apology form the State of Florida.
In his own defense Melendez admitted to having been with the woman who was known as Dorothy Rivera on the evening of September 13th, 1983. This was an evidence that was confirmed with the evidence of witnesses. There was no evidence that linked Melendez to the crime scene.

Juan Roberto Melendez Colon (born May 24 1951) is a speaking and human rights advocate who was wrongly found guilty of murder. He was sentenced to 17 years on the death penalty. His release from jail was on the 3rd of January 2002, making it the 99th dead row prisoner of the United States to be exonerated and released from prison in the year 1973.
In 1974, Melendez was detained by police in Florida as a result of an assault. He was sentenced to more than six years in jail. He was released and re- entered the world as a farmer migrant until FBI agents detained Melendez on the streets of Pennsylvania aged 33. He was arrested for his involvement in the murder of Florida murder at His Auburndale beauty salon owned by Delbert “Mr. Del Baker, whom Melendez says he has never ever met.
