Another article was about a lesser-known insurance company called the Customer Asset Protection Corp. (CAPCO) owned by several Wall Street companies.

Kouwe started his journalism career as a reporter at the Wall Street Letter trade publication, published by Institutional Investor in 2000. Kouwe was the editor of Institutional Investor’s Spring ETF Report in 2002. This publication covered the growing market for exchange-traded fund funds. Kouwe, who was 30 years old, joined the Times in Oct 2008 as one of its last employees. This was before the Times announced a 5% reduction in wages and a 10% decrease in the staff of its newsroom. Kouwe was a writer for the DealBook blog at the Times. This blog covers mergers, acquisitions, and hedge funds. He also contributed articles to the business section.

The wrongdoing was originally brought to the attention of The Times on February 12 by Robert Thomson, managing editor of rival The Wall Street Journal, stating that portions of an article written by Kouwe and published on February 5 “were identical or nearly identical to a Journal article published online hours before…”. Before Kouwe’s resignation was announced, The Guardian had obtained and posted online a copy of Thomson’s letter to The Times. The Times’s Editor’s Note on Kouwe’s resignation specified that the original evidence referenced an article about “an asset freeze for members of Bernard L. Madoff’s family.” The note further described the wrongdoing as “appropriat[ing] wording and passages published by other news organizations … without attribution or acknowledgment.” The term “plagiarism” was not used in the correction. The Times never officially corrected any other articles that Kouwe wrote.
