After four years of waiting Ferris’s third novel To Rise Again at a Decent Hour, was released on May 14, 2014. The novel was nominated to be a finalist for 2014’s Man Booker Prize in the first time American fiction was qualified, and it was awarded it the 2014 Dylan Thomas Prize and the National Jewish Book Award.

Ferris completed his studies at the University of Iowa with a BA in English and Philosophy in the year 1996. Ferris then relocated from Iowa to Chicago to work in the field of advertising for a number of years before receiving the MFA in writing at UC Irvine. His first story published, “Mrs. Blue” was published in Iowa Review in 1999. Then We Ended Our Story was greeted with favorable reviewers by The New York Times Book Review, The New Yorker, Esquire, and Slate The book it has been published in 25 languages, and was one of the finalist in the National Book Award, and was awarded his 2007 PEN/Hemingway Award.
The New Yorker published a short story by Ferris named “The Dinner Party”, in August 2008. This story helped him become an eligible nominee of the Shirley Jackson Awards. Another story, titled “A Night Out”, will be published in Tin House’s 10th anniversary issue. Other short stories have appeared in Best New American Voices 2007 and New Stories from the South 2007. Nonfiction by him has been published in two anthologies: State by State and Heavy Rotation. The New Yorker included him in their 2010 “20 Under 40” list.
