After finishing High School in 1977 Vogl enrolled in German writing, philosophy, and historical studies at Munich in Munich and Paris. He earned his M.A. at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in 1984. He obtained an honorary doctorate from the department of German literature in the year 1990. For his book Der Souveränitätseffekt (“The Sovereignty Effect”) Vogl was on the shortlist for the Leipzig Book Fair Prize 2015 in the category of non- fiction.
