Gary Westfahl is one of the most popular and richest Literary Scholar who was born on May 7, 1951 in Washington, D.C., United States. The 2002 publication Science Fiction, Canonization, Marginalization and the Academy which was co-authored by George Slusser, “contends that scholars and critics have “control on literature” through deciding which texts and genres are “enshrined or “canonized”” in contrast to others that are excluded (“exiled”) from scholarship and literature classes.”
Westfahl coordinates English programs at the university’s Learning Center and “has written or edited 24 books of scholarship on science fiction”. He teaches science fiction, but has not written any. His wife Lynne is a professor in the theater department at Cal State Fullerton. Westfahl also taught at Heman G. Stark Correctional Facility for young adults, which closed in 2010.
An evaluation of his book from 2000, Science Fiction, Children’s Literature and Popular Culture, affirms that it is a powerful and insightful insights into various popular cultural styles however “the book does not offer any overarching argument” and is too individual in its method of addressing the matter.
He wrote The Mechanics of Wonder published in 1998, which focuses on the development of the science fiction genres. An article in Utopian Studies described it as “an essential book for anyone interested in the historical background of science fiction or the description, history and/or historiography of genres . said it dealt with the “Battle between the books, which is a battle of culture with respect to Old World and New World claims to (Science Fiction) and between various methods of scholarship and on the larger political scene”.
Westfahl edited The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Science Fiction and Fantasy published in 2005. He also edited Science Fiction Quotations. Both books are described as useful and fun.
