John “Johnny” Sansone (born on 27th September 1957) Also popularly known as Jumpin’ Johnny Sansone, is an American electric blues musician and songwriter. He is also a harmonicist, songwriter accordionist, guitarist, and pianist. Sansone was nominated seven awards in the field of music in 2012, among them an Blues Music Award which he took home. So far, he’s had a hand in the release 12 original albums.

Sansone was unable to sustain his momentum until the beginning of 2000, but the musician continued to be a part of diverse musical groups, and was also employed during the week as a construction worker. He began to perform in a trio alongside Joe Krown and John Fohl. They performed blues tunes from the traditional with Krown as the piano player, along with Fohl along with Sansone sharing vocal duties. The trio comprising Sansone, Krown, and Fohl released an album with the same name on the label of Sansone ShortStack Records in 2004.

By then playing in another acoustic trio setting, this time with Osborne and Fohl, Sansone was inspired to write the track, “The Lord Is Waiting and The Devil Is Too”. It turned in to the title track of his 2011 album, and won the ‘Song of the Year’ title at the 2012 Blues Music Awards. It provided a release from the stresses of a marital break-up, and the record’s producer Osborn pushed Sansone’s music towards a more commercial, rock influenced, direction. In October 2012, Sansone performed at the Voodoo Experience in New Orleans, and in December that year, Sansone appeared at the inaugural Bradenton Blues Festival.

After a couple of live album releases, Sansone’s next studio based creation was Once It Gets Started (2013). Sansone then gave “one of the best individual performances of the 2014 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival,” according to Offbeat magazine.

Sansone travelled between Colorado, Austin, Texas, Florida, Chicago, and Chapel Hill, North Carolina and finally settled at the end of 1990, in New Orleans, which has been his home since then. The band he formed called Jumpin’ Johnny and The Blues Party released the album they released as their first,”Where Y’at” in 1987. It was released by an independent record label Kingsnake Records, based in Sanford, Florida. Mr. Good Thing (1991) followed, and Sansone was attracted to trying his guitar following the funeral for Clifton Chenier.

Sansone was born as a child in West Orange, New Jersey, United States. His father played the trumpet in the Dave Brubeck’s group in World War II, and when he reached 12 years old the son of his father had begun learning how to play the saxophone harmonica and guitar, and was able to see Howlin Wolf performing live. He continued to study blues harmonica by studying Junior Wells and James Cotton. Sansone went to West Orange High School. He quit New Jersey in 1975 on the basis of a swimming scholarship to an institution in Colorado. Sansone was a touring musician in the 1980s , supporting Robert Lockwood, Jr., David “Honeyboy” Edwards and Jimmy Rogers.

In the latter quarter of the 1990s Sansone had begun to incorporate Cajun, Southern soul, Chicago and Delta blues in his style and songwriting. The resultant album, Crescent City Moon (1997) was mostly his own work, although it also featured a cover of Ted Hawkins’ “Sweet Baby” featuring Sonny Landreth playing slide guitar. The album also included liner notes written by Greg “Fingers” Taylor. The album received wide critical acclaim as well as numerous awards, such as winning numerous Offbeat magazine’s “Best of the Beat” distinctions. Rounder Records subsidiary label, Bullseye Blues, issued Waternelon Patch (1999) that featured guest appearances from Jon Cleary (piano) and Joe Krown (organ).

In 2005, Sansone joined the Voice of the Wetlands Allstars (which variously incorporated Dr. John, Cyril Neville, Monk Boudreaux, Johnny Vidacovich, Anders Osborne, George Porter, Jr., Waylon Thibodeaux, and Tab Benoit), who were interested in promoting local environmental issues. The band became a regular feature at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Having to vacate his home in the legacy of Hurricane Katrina, Sansone continued to tour and perform with the Voice of the Wetlands Allstars, wherein he befriended Anders Osborne. Poor Man’s Paradise (2007) was Sansone’s first solo album for eight years and was produced by Osborne who also played clavinet and slide guitar on two of the tracks. Joe Krown also contributed on the electric organ. In 2009, Sansone played the accordion on Mike Zito’s album, Pearl River.
