Neel was born in Wilmington, Delaware. He cut his first single, entitled “Talking About People”, at the age of twelve, as Johnny Neel and The Shapes Of Soul, which was a hit on local radio in the Wilmington/Philadelphia area. In his later years the Johnny Neel Band had a huge following across the east coast, and also released two albums that were well-loved by fans. Neel relocated into Nashville around 1984. He was performing with various bands in local clubs attracted the attention of the former Nashville residence Dickey Betts who requested Neel to become part of the touring band and soon began work on Betts’ solo album with Epic Records. This led to seven tracks from”The Pattern” album. in 2000 Neel came out with Late Night Breakfast which was recorded in the Straight Up Sound Studio with members of his band The Last Word, along with special guests guitarists Shane Theriot (The Neville Brothers) as well as Rick Vito, as well as Wayne Jackson on trumpet. In 2000, the album Late Night Breakfast was released on Neel’s Breakin’ Record label.

The group Deep Fried included Neel on keyboards, drummer Matt Abts, guitarist Brian Stoltz, and bassist George Porter Jr.. Their album The Deep Fried Sessions – Live was released in 2004. The other group, The Grease Factor released two live recordings; Off the Cuff in 2004, and Live From Zambifest 2004 in 2005. The Grease Factor included guitarist Shane Theriot, bassist Derek Jones, drummer Jeff Sipe, and percussionist Count M’Butu.

In 1995 the album of Neel Commin’ Atcha… Live was released . It contained live performances of “Read Me My Rights” and “Maydell”. The album featured an appearance live by Neel as well as the band The Last Word including Jack Pearson and the majority of musicians from The Last Word album.

Neel’s enthralling piano and harmonica on his Pattern Disruptive album inspired Gregg Allman to ask Neel to join his band, which resulted in the inclusion of the track “Island” on The Gregg Allman Band album (also released in 1988) written by Allman, Dan Toler, and Tony Colton. In 1989, Neel was asked to join the newly reunited Allman Brothers Band. He was absorbed in performing writing, recording, and writing which resulted in four songs of the group’s Seven Turns album (released in 1990) and the smash song “Good Clean Fun”, written by Neel along with Allman along with Betts. Country stars in 2002 Montgomery Gentry included “Good Clean Fun” as a track on the My Town album. album.

The album also featured appearances from Jack Pearson (Allman Brothers) on guitar, and Delbert McClinton playing harmonica.

During the period of time the Late Night Breakfast recordings were made, Neel also became a member of Blue Floyd, an all-star jam band performing variations on the material of Pink Floyd. In addition to Neel, the band was composed of guitarist Marc Ford, drummer Matt Abts, bassist Berry Oakley Jr. (OKB Band) and until his death, Allen Woody on second guitar. Neel and Abts then went into the Straight Up Sound Studio and recorded the X2 funk/jam duo project. X2 – Johnny Neel / Matt Abts was released in 2002.
