Gary Lewin (born 16 May 1964) is an English physiotherapist who worked for the clubs of football Arsenal as well as West Ham United, and the England national team. Lewin served as head physiotherapist for Arsenal for 22 years. He was in a similar role since 1996 in England as well as from 2008 until 2017, he assumed the role of England’s senior Director of Physiotherapy. He was the Head of Medical Services for West Ham between May 2017 until May 2018.

Lewin was a first-team physiotherapist for Arsenal over a period of 22 years and from 1996 onwards was part of the England national team too. His period at Arsenal ended when he was appointed by the Football Association as England’s Head of Physiotherapy at the beginning of August 2008.

On 30 May 2017, Lewin was appointed as the Head of Medical Services at West Ham United. He left the club following the appointment for Manuel Pellegrini as manager at the end of the 2017–18 season.

On 20 March 2017, Lewin rejoined Arsenal as physiotherapist for the women’s team.

In the 2007 Football League Cup Final on 25 February 2007 Lewin was near to the incident that occurred when Chelsea captain John Terry was hit in the face by the foot of Abou Diaby during an attack within the Arsenal penalty area. Terry was unable to swallow his tongue, and Lewin became the first medical professional to rush over and helped Terry in possibly saving his life. Lewin was acknowledged as a ex- Arsenal forward Eduardo da Silva with saving his career and his foot following the injury to his leg on the 23rd of February, 2008.

Lewin began his career at Arsenal as a goalie in the midst of his youth at the age of 16 in 1980. After a brief stint at Barnet the physiotherapist was appointed reserve team when he was 19. He studied in the Guy’s Hospital School of Physiotherapy from 1983 until 1986, prior to returning back to Arsenal in 1986 to become the first team the physiotherapist. Lewin is now able to earn the BSc (hons) on Biology as well as an Diploma with a Diploma in Physiotherapy. He is also a member of the college of sports Physiotherapists and an accredited Physiotherapist in the State of New Jersey.

Lewin was called to action in 1989 when the man was almost forced to break David Rocastle’s jaw after he swallowed his tongue in order that he could perform lifesaving treatment. Lewin went on to become an expert on injuries to the hamstring thanks to his work working with Tony Adams, and advised Birmingham City’s physiotherapists regarding the treatment for injured midfielder David Dunn.

During England’s first game of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, against Italy, Lewin was stretchered off. During the celebrations for the equalising goal by Daniel Sturridge, Lewin jumped up and slipped on some synthetic turf, and was later diagnosed with a dislocation to his left ankle and from that dislocation he fractured the fibula in two places, fractured the back of the tibia and also ruptured the ligaments.
