Flerlage, Jr. was born in Cincinnati, OH. He relocated into Cambridge, MA to attend Harvard College. Then, he went to Harvard Medical School and the Episcopal Divinity School. He worked in psychiatry for more than thirty years at Brookline as well as Waltham, MA, until 1989 when he passed away. There were six of his children: including five boys in succession and John being the third and one daughter. John’s mother was doctor. Patricia Ewalt, was born in Newton, MA. As she raised four sons she earned the doctorate degree in social service and later became the Director of the School of Social Work at Kansas University. Later, she resigned from the same post in the University of Hawaii.

Flerlage was a 22-year veteran of his time in the Marine Corps before retiring as Lieutenant Colonel of the Marine Corps Reserve in 2000. In his 11 active- duty years and 11 months as a member of the Reserves, Flerlage flew the F/A-18 Hornet and A-4 Skyhawk in historical squadrons like those of the VMA-214 Blacksheep, operating in California, Japan, South Korea and the Philippines as well as in the VMFA-142 Flying Gators (based in Florida and Georgia). He was in various Squadron and Group leadership levels as well as staff positions. He also taught classes on international affairs, strategic commitments and the deployment of fighters as well as other tactical aircrafts at the Marine advanced tactical school for aviation (Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron 1,). In his reserve time Flerlage also served as a volunteer and flew missions as part to NATO missions in Bosnia and later, in 1996, he received the honor of being selected to pilot the Hornet onboard the USS George Washington (CVN-73) as one of the initial Marine Reserve carrier qualifications to be conducted in more than 15 years.

His wife Helena who is a naturalized citizen from Sweden and moved to Littleton located in Arapahoe County in 1995 and later to their new residence in South Jefferson County in 1997. He is a regular volunteer in school for his children, David (21) and who has graduated in the class of Columbine High School in 1997 and currently is enrolled at Columbia University; Lisa (17) who is who is currently an undergraduate at Columbine and Karl (11). Flerlage played varsity hockey during high school and in college, and continues to play for an adult team at the local level. He especially enjoys coaching hockey. He founded with the Columbine Hockey Club in the year 2000 and then became an assistant coach for high school at Columbine when the school was formed into an CHSAA (varsity) hockey club. Flerlage is an experienced Level 5 coach at USA Hockey and is also an active part of the Colorado Governor’s Council for Physical Fitness [11.
