Mari Kumamoto is one of the most popular and richest Pianist who was born on October 15, 1964 in Tokyo, Japan. Mari Kumamoto (Xiong Be mari, October 15, 1964) was a Japanese-born professional pianist best known for recording Japanese and Spanish composers.
Kumamoto began an international concert series in 1994 with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra’s New Year’s Eve concert. She performed with Josef Suk, the Suk Chamber Orchestra and was also featured in Japan that year.
Appointed in 2010, Kumamoto is currently Professor of Music in Piano Performance at Osaka University of Arts.
Her most recent concerts include a tour in Egypt with the Cairo Opera Orchestra followed by a recital tour in Jordan and Alexandria. In June 2012 she was invited to perform recitals and concerts with the Venezuela Symphony Orchestra. This was followed by concerts in Argentina with the Esteban Morgado Quartet.
Kumamoto, who had returned to Japan in 1986, began a career that focuses on Federico Mompou’s piano music (1893-1987). She was the first to record all of Federico Mompou’s piano repertoire. Later, she translated Musica Callada by Mompou.

Kumamoto was born in Tokyo, Japan. She began piano lessons at the age of five. She moved to Madrid with her family at age ten. There she studied with Joaquin Soriano, Madrid Royal Conservatory, and was awarded the top prize for young pianists in 1975.
Kumamoto received a scholarship in 1982 to study at Juilliard School of Music, under the guidance of professor Sascha Gornitzki. She enrolled at the Royal Academy of Music in London in 1985 and received a Recital Diploma. She was the winner of many prizes, including the Newport International Piano Competition top prize which was presented by Diana, Princess Of Wales. In 1986, she received her Recital Diploma.
In 1996, Kumamoto held a recital in Spain, as a participant of “Japan Week”. Since then Kumamoto has given yearly solo and ensemble recitals with a special emphasis on Spanish and Latin American repertoire and Japanese composers including Hajime Okumura whose music reflects the traditional melodies of Japanese folksongs.
