John Ellinger Biography

John Ellinger is one of the most popular and richest Association Football Player who was born on October 4, 1951 in Baltimore, United States. John Ellinger (born October 4 1951) was a former American soccer coach for the under-17 United States men’s national soccer team. He was also the chief coach at Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer.

In 2005 Ellinger joined Real Salt Lake to become the first expansion team’s coach. Prior to that, Ellinger had one season of coaching experience in the professional arena working as an assistant coach with Columbus Crew. Columbus Crew in its inaugural season in 1996.

On May 3, 2007, he was replaced as RSL’s head coach after two losing seasons, followed by a win less start in the first month of his third year. Ellinger’s overall record with the club was 15-37-16.

Ellinger became an assistant coach at F. C. Dallas of Major League Soccer on June 19, 2008. Head Coach Schellas Hyndman indicated he valued Ellinger’s previous experience coaching in MLS. On November 15, 2012, F. C. Dallas announced Ellinger’s retirement. During his time as an assistant coach at F.C. Dallas the team compiled a 53-46-47 record. The best record of the team during that time was in 2010 with a 3rd-place finish in the Western Conference on a 12-4-14 record and runner-up in the 2010 MLS Cup final.

Ellinger began his career as the U.S. Soccer National Staff Coach in 1992 and has held several various positions since the time he was hired. In particular, he’s been the head coach for the under-17 United States men’s national soccer team since 1997 and Director for the Youth Development in 2001. As the coach for the U-17’s, Ellinger has also been the director of the USSF’s Bradenton Academy, where the majority of America’s most talented youngsters are nurtured. When at Bradenton, Ellinger had a major role in the development of some of the best American footballers, such as Landon Donovan, DaMarcus Beasley, Bobby Convey, Edward Johnson, Chad Marshall, Freddy Adu, Eddie Gaven, Danny Szetela, and Jonathan Spector.

Ellinger played in the collegiate level during his time at Frostburg State University, graduating in 1973. He also played in the club league for the Washington Soccer Club at the beginning the coaching profession.

Ellinger served as the assistant to Tom Bichy in Montgomery College from 1979 to 1981, during which time Montgomery College’s team was awarded an No. 5 ranking nationally. He was forced to leave Montgomery to become a coach for Maryland’s University of Maryland, Baltimore County and stayed there between 1981 and 1990.

After losing his coaching position, he was retained by RSL as the club’s technical director and director of soccer operations, where he remained until September 2007.
