Asimakopoulos is born the 10th of September 1970. After going to the high school of Athens, Greece, he moved back to United States. Asimakopoulos earned a bachelor’s degree from the departments of sociology, economics and political science at Rutgers University in 1992. He stayed at Rutgers to complete his masters degree in 1993, obtaining the MA Economics in 1993 as well as an MA in political science in 1994. He continued on to earn a doctorate in the sociology programme at CUNY Graduate Center, which was completed in the year 2000. The doctoral advisor for him was Paul Attewell, and his thesis was titled Comparative Analyzing European and American Worker Class Attainments.

TSI is the publisher of the journal interdisciplinary Theory in Action, founded by Asimakopoulos in the year 2008. The journal also has its own journal, the Journal of Social Justice, which was established in 2011. Asimakopoulos is the editor-in chief and editor-in-chief of the two journals. There’s an TSI YouTube channel which hosts the series of videos “Crushing Capitalism with Dr. Asimakopoulos”. TSI states that their mission is to create an interdisciplinarity graduate school that focuses on social issues and social justice.

In 2007 Asimakopoulos was the co-founder of Transformative Studies Institute (TSI) along with Ali Zaid. The two Asimakopoulos as well as Zaid were faced with non-renewal of their contracts with Bronx Community College (Asimakopoulos later was reinstated by arbitration). Asimakopoulos has stated that he created TSI in response to this incident. Asimakopoulos is the director-executive of this section 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

John Asimakopoulos (born September 10 1970) is an American sociologist and writer. He is an instructor of sociology at Bronx Community College. Asimakopoulos is the founder of The Transformative Studies Institute (see section below) .

After working for a while as an adjunct instructor for New Jersey and New York local universities, in 2004, he was appointed an adjunct professor for social science at Bronx Community College. The public was aware of him in 2006, after his employer, the City University of New York was unable to keep his appointment on account of “lack of collegiality”. Asimakopoulos asserted that it was a political reprimand due to his outspoken socialist libertarian ideology. Asimakopoulos requested arbitration and was awarded the award in 2008 and then returned to his job. Asimakopoulos says he is an “Scholar- Activist” and “Organic Intellectual”.
