American sociologist Michael Scott Kimmel was born February 26, 1951. He specializes in gender studies. He is the Distinguished Professor of Sociology at Stony Brook University, New York. He also founded and edited the academic journal Men and Masculinities. Kimmel is a national spokesperson for the National Organization for Men Against Sexism and a long-time feminist. He founded the Center for the Study of Men and Masculinities of Stony Brook University in 2013. He is the Executive Director. He was accused publicly of sexual harassment in 2018.
Kimmel is a prominent figure in the academic field of men’s research. Kimmel is a prolific writer on gender and masculinities, including Men’s Lives (2010), The Gendered Society (2011), Manhood: A Cultural History (2012), Guyland: The Perilous World where Boys Become Men (2008). The Handbook of Studies on Men and Masculinities (2006) and Men and Masculinities. This book was awarded the “Best of Reference 2004” award by New York Public Library. He is also the editor of a New York University Press series on genders, sexualities. Kimmel created the journal Masculinities in 1992-1993. It was affiliated with the American Men’s Studies Association. This journal was an ancestor of Men and Masculinities, which was later acquired by SAGE Publications. It was edited by Kimmel and was one of the first academic journals focusing on men.
The Carnegie Corporation of New York selected Kimmel as one of fifteen scholars to receive innovative scholarship in 2004. His research title was “Globalization, its Mal(e),contents: The Gendered Political and Moral Economy of the Extreme Right”.

Kimmel was born into a Jewish secular family and received a B.A. With distinction, Vassar College awarded Kimmel a B.A. in 1972 and an M.A. in 1982. Brown University in 1972; an M.A.
Kimmel was an assistant professor of sociology at Rutgers University between 1982 and 1986, as well as visiting assistant at New York University. Kimmel returned to his alma maternity, the University of California at Berkeley, where he served as visiting professor between 1992 and 1994. He was named “Best Professor” by The Daily Californian for the academic year 1992-1993.
Just before receiving the American Sociological Association’s Jessie Bernard Award in 2018, Kimmel was accused of sexual harassment. Soon after, the American Sociological Association provided a statement by him to the Chronicle of Higher Education in an article that outlined a history of sexual harassment and an on-going Title IX investigation. In this statement, he delayed receipt of the award, giving his accusers six months to file a complaint with the American Sociological Association’s Committee on Professional Ethics. No charges were ever filed. In addition, there were never any formal allegations by any individuals. Since that time one of Kimmel’s former graduate student’s accused him of occasionally espousing discriminatory attitudes towards the trans community, discussing pornography in work-related settings, and assigning non-work related tasks to his advisees.
