James Thomas Wiley (born April 28th 1950) is a Canadian retired professional ice hockey player and coach. He played 62 games for the National Hockey League between 1972 and 1977, alternating in between Pittsburgh Penguins and Vancouver Canucks and the majority of his playing time with the junior Central Hockey League. Wiley quit as a player at the age of 80 and, in 1984, became an assistant trainer in the United States Hockey League, and later became a coach in various minor leagues. In 1995 and 1996, Wiley was the coach of hockey’s NHL’s San Jose Sharks for the final game of the season before returning to the minor leagues. The last time he was coach was in the year 2008.
After the Sharks dismissed the head coach Kevin Constantine after a dismal 3-18-4 record, Wiley was promoted to the head coaching role at the NHL club. Although his record of 17-37-3 was an improvement over the previous season however, it wasn’t enough to allow Wiley to be able to keep his job. After the season ended Wiley was transferred again to the Sharks their highest farm team which is now known as the Kentucky Thoroughblades, where he worked until 1998.
After departure, Wiley would move into coaching. Wiley was the longest-running head coach for the Des Moines Buccaneers of the United States Hockey League before making the move to the professional ranks in 1993 as the head coaching coach with the Kansas City Blades, the most prestigious team of the San Jose Sharks.

Born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Wiley was a free agent to the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1972 following an excellent collegiate experience with Lake Superior State University, becoming the first Lakers alumni to be a part of the NHL. He spent most of the next two seasons playing for the Hershey Bears, Pittsburgh’s AHL affiliate, but he played in 27 games with the Penguins during that time with four assists.
Wiley was picked for his team, the Vancouver Canucks in the 1974 league draft, but was able to work as a minor professional. He would be granted a 2 game callup in 1975-76. He would experience the longest NHL time in 1976-77 in which he scored four goals and scored 10 points in 34 games with the Canucks. He would then retire in the year 1980 and not be able to see any more NHL games.
