Jarkko Samuli Ruutu, pronounced Yarko Rootu (IPA: /jrko ‘ru.tu/ ; born August 23, 1975), is a Finnish ex-professional ice hockey player who was a member of the National Hockey League (NHL), where he played with the Anaheim Ducks, Pittsburgh Penguins and Ottawa Senators. He currently serves as an European development coach for Columbus Blue Jackets.
Ruutu led Finland to second place at the 2004 World Cup. Canada won the championship.
Ruutu had his best NHL season to date statistically in the 2005–06 season, scoring 10 goals and 7 assists for 17 points in 82 games, while amassing 142 penalty minutes with the Canucks. In the off-season, Ruutu became a free agent on July 1, 2006, and signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He recorded his first three-point game in NHL during his second season with the Penguins on March 27, 2008, against the New York Islanders.
In July 2008, Ruutu signed with the Ottawa Senators to a three-year, $3.9 million contract. On November 13, 2008, he was suspended two games for elbowing Maxim Lapierre in the head two days earlier in a game against the Montreal Canadiens.
Ruutu was a Canucks player for the 2001-02 season. He earned a reputation as one the NHL’s best “pests” and “agitators.” During the 2004-05 NHL lockout Ruutu returned to HIFK and set a SM–liiga record of 215 penalty minutes in a single year (since broken down by Matt Nickerson).

Ruutu first moved to North America to play college hockey at Michigan Tech, Western Collegiate Hockey Association. After his first year, he moved back to Finland and became a professional hockey player with HIFK, SM-liiga 1996-97. He had 20 points in 37 games during his draft year and was then drafted in the third round by the Vancouver Canucks, 68th overall in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. After one more season at HIFK, he returned to North America to join the Canucks’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch.
Ruutu was a participant in six World Championships together with Finland. He has won silver medals (2001, 2007) and bronze medal (2006).
Ruutu also won a silver medal with Finland at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. He gained notoriety during the tournament when he checked Czech winger Jaromír Jágr to the boards while Jágr was crouching.
