While a Yale student, Prosek published his first novel in 1996. Trout: An Illustrated History featured watercolors of 70 species, subspecies and strains of trout from North America. Prosek was widely known for bringing attention to the plight and existence of native trout through Trout, his first book of this kind. In 1997, Prosek published Joe and Me: A Education in Fishing and Friendship. Trout of the World is his second trout book. It contains one hundred watercolors of native trout of Europe, Asia, and North Africa.
Prosek was awarded a Peabody Award in 2002 for his documentary about 17th- century angler and author Izaak Walton, and his book The Compleat Angler. He was an undergraduate at Yale University and majored English Literature. He also joined the Manuscript Society. Harold Bloom, a literary critic, said that Prosek was a writer who is both natural and artistic, and an original in literature as well as painting.
His book, Eels: An Exploration, From New Zealand to the Sargasso, of the World’s Most Mysterious Fish, was released by HarperCollins in September 2011 and was a New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice. The book was adapted as a documentary for the PBS series “Nature” that aired in 2013.
