Colvin took a wicket, and also caught, in her first Twenty20 match against New Zealand at Taunton on 10 August 2007. Despite being the smallest player in the squad, Colvin was able to fit comfortably in a cricket bag. She also took wickets in two subsequent matches.

2005. Colvin admitted that she felt “a little under pressure” before the one- match series; England had not won the Women’s Ashes for 42 years prior to the victory in 2005. She claimed that the team were “definitely looking to win… we’ve got more to lose”. The England Team won the match by six wickets, successfully retaining the Ashes trophy. Colvin set a new personal best for Test matches, taking three for 42 during the second innings. Her best bowling analysis in ODI cricket was exceeded on 1 September 2008 when she took 4 for 20 against India in the second match of the series at Taunton.

Colvin was a right-handed bat and left-arm bowler. He attended Westbourne House School in West Sussex as a batsman. Colvin started playing for Westbourne XI in year 7, scoring over 100 runs per game. Colvin played in the Brighton College boys’ team after Westbourne House. Colvin and Sarah Taylor, a fellow Brightonian, were the only two girls in the 1,000-strong field that participated in the Lord’s Taverners under-15 Cup 2004. The MCC was not pleased with Taylor and Colvin’s participation in the competition. Colvin was first introduced to international cricket in August 2005 when Colvin was part of the England team that was preparing for a match against the Australian women’s team at the Hove County Cricket Ground. Colvin was invited to play against the English team in nets in order to practice against Shelley Nitschke, the left-arm spinner. Richard Bates, Colvin’s coach, asked her to make herself available for the match. Clare Connor, team captain, admitted that Colvin’s inclusion was “pure hunch”, as she believed that the wicket’s dry and dusty conditions would favor spin bowling. According to Bates, “the pitch was a bit worn and we felt Holly could help us exploit that.” Colvin made her England debut in 2005 at the age of 15 and was 336 days old. In her first game, Colvin took three wickets. She dismissed Kate Blackwell in two balls and Julia Price in the third. Julie Hayes was almost outrun by Colvin. Colvin, reminiscing about the February 2008 experience, said that she felt “lucky”. Colvin said that she didn’t know who she was playing against. There were so many big names coming up against her and I had almost no idea. She called her near-hat trick a “pretty unique [moment]”.

Although Bates said that “she might have to wait a few years before she gets another chance [to play for England]”, Colvin became a regular member of England’s international teams. By August 2007, she had two Test matches and eleven One Day Internationals to her credit. In the Women’s Quadrangular Series in India in 2006, Colvin took three wickets for 47 against New Zealand, and then 3 for 50 in the 3rd–4th playoff to secure the England team 3rd place.
